Department of Islamic Antiquities

Overview

  • Studies began in the Archaeology Department in 1977. The Department of Archaeology was divided into two branches within the Faculty of Arts at Assiut University, followed by the South Valley University and the Sohag University.
  • In 1990, the Department of Egyptian Antiquities and the Department of Islamic Antiquities were separated and became two independent departments. The Restoration Department was added to the Department of Antiquities at Faculty of Arts in 2000.
  • Faculty of Archaeology at Sohag University was established by Prime Ministerial Decree No. 3512 of 2015, and studies began in 2016/2017

Vision

The Islamic Archaeology Program at Faculty of Archaeology, Sohag University, seeks to achieve academic and research excellence within the framework of comprehensive quality standards in the fields of education, scientific research, community service, and environmental development.

The Islamic Archaeology Program at Faculty of Archaeology, Sohag University, aims to prepare academically and practically qualified graduates who possess the scientific and professional skills required by the labor market. It also seeks to achieve the goals of continuing education and develop scientific research skills at the undergraduate and graduate levels

It aims to achieve an effective partnership in the field of community service, environmental development, field archaeology, and museum science.

Strategic Objectives

  • Develop curricula to keep pace with global developments in the education and scientific research in the field of Islamic archaeology.
  •  Introduce new curricula that encompass all modern trends in the study of Islamic archaeology and meet the needs of the labor market in Egypt and the Arab region
  • Linking the program’s scientific research to societal issues and preserving tangible heritage, particularly Islamic antiquities.
  • Adhering to local and international academic standards for comprehensive quality in the design of courses and curricula.
  •  Continuously assessing teaching and learning outcomes to achieve educational and research objectives and serve the community and labor market, while ensuring their advancement
  •  starting the study in all branches of Islamic archaeology to the people of Sohag Governorate in particular, Upper Egypt, and Egypt in general.

Academic programs

Bachelor

  • Through the Islamic Archaeology Program, a Bachelor’s degree in Islamic Archaeology is awarded after completing four full years of study.
  • The Islamic Archaeology Program accepts students who have obtained a high school diploma in the science and literature streams
  • A bachelor’s degree is awarded after successfully completing four full academic years, divided into eight semesters.
  • Students choose the Islamic Archaeology program upon enrolment in their first year

Scientific trips

  • The department conducts practical training at Islamic archaeological sites in Cairo, Rashid, and Alexandria. It also conducts field visits to archaeological sites in Sohag Governorate, such as the White and Red Monasteries in western Sohag, the Qaythariya area in Girga, and archaeological sites in Akhmim, such as the Prince Hassan Mosque. These field trips, which comprise 50 hours of training, are part of the student’s field trips.
  •  The department also organizes a scientific trip every year to visit the archaeological sites that are taught to the department’s students. Through this trip, the students get to know the archaeological sites and museums that contain the antiquities that are the subject of their studies, where the staff members and their assistants.
  •  The department will explain and clarify the subject to students on the ground in order to develop archaeological research among the department’s students. This trip includes a visit to the Islamic and Christian archaeological sites in Cairo, as well as a visit to the archaeological sites in the city of Rashid and Alexandria.

  • It is a library which subordinate to Islamic department granted from professor Abd el-Rahman Fahmy Mohamed ,a professor of  coins and Islamic archeology, as the library contains many references, periodical and scientific theses which serve the researchers

Arabic books

The number of Arabic books reached 3394 books according to the registration number, in addition to the book parts that are divided into parts.

The number of foreign books reached 640 books according to the registration number, in addition to the parts of the books that are divided into parts, so the total number of Arabic and foreign books is 4034.

The number of Arab master’s theses reached 146 theses according to the registration number, in addition to parts of the theses that are divided into more than one part.

The number of Arab doctoral theses reached 39 theses according to the registration number, in addition to parts of the theses that are divided into more than one part, so the total number of master’s and doctoral theses is 185.

The number of Arab periodicals reached 104, according to the registration number, in addition to the parts of the periodicals according to their various issues.

The number of foreign periodicals reached 46, according to the registration number, in addition to parts of the periodicals according to their various editions, bringing the total number of Arab and foreign periodicals to 150.
